Short version: your songs stay on your device. Notes to Play has no ads, no tracking and no analytics. We only receive what you choose to send us with Send feedback, plus the basic records any website keeps.
1. Who we are
Notes to Play is made by Smart Man Media, LLC. For anything about your data, use Send feedback in the app or write to [email protected].
2. What stays on your device
These are stored only in your browser on the device you use, and are not sent to us:
- your songs (chords, parts, beats, melodies, lyrics and notes), song settings, each song's mix (faders, mutes, EQ, reverb and finish) and your saved song list;
- audio you record (takes), your own sound samples, and files you load;
- your settings, the name you give your profile, layout choices and MIDI controller setup;
- the app itself and its sounds, kept for offline use.
Microphone sound is used live, on your device, for recording takes, Listen for a chord and tuning. It is never uploaded.
When you export a mix (WAV or MP3) in Mix & Master, the song plays through once on your device while it is recorded, and the file is made on your device. It is saved where you choose: a folder you picked, your downloads, or your device's share sheet. It is never sent to us.
You can delete everything by clearing the site's data in your browser or uninstalling the app.

If an email address for feedback is set up, feedback is also emailed to us. We don't sell, rent or share your information, and we don't use it for advertising.
4. Other services the app talks to
- Google Fonts, the app's typefaces are loaded from Google, which receives your IP address and browser details as part of that request. See Google's privacy policy.
- Datamuse, when you look up rhymes or related words while writing lyrics, the word you look up is sent to the free Datamuse word service (api.datamuse.com). Nothing else is sent.
- Your device's share sheet, when you tap Share, the song goes to the app you choose (messages, email…), under that app's own privacy terms.
- Your web host stores the app files and the feedback inbox.
5. Permissions the app asks for
- Microphone, only for recording, chord listening and tuning, used on your device.
- Keep my songs on this device (persistent storage), asks the browser not to clear the app's data when space runs low.
- Save files to a folder (computers, Chrome / Edge), lets exported songs and mixes be written into a folder you pick. The app can only touch that folder.
- Notifications, only to tell you a new version is ready.
- MIDI, to play from a MIDI keyboard or controller you connect.
You can allow or block each one in the app (profile → Permissions) or in your browser's site settings.
6. Your choices and rights
You can ask us what feedback we hold from you, to correct it, or to delete it, use Send feedback or write to [email protected]. Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU/UK or state laws in the US), you may have further rights, including complaining to your data protection authority. During the beta we rely on your consent (you choose to send feedback) and our legitimate interest in running and securing the app.
7. Children
The beta is for invited testers and isn't directed at children under 13. If you think a child has sent us feedback, tell us and we'll delete it.
8. Security
The app is only served over an encrypted (https) connection, the beta is behind a sign-in, and the feedback inbox can't be opened from the web. No system is perfectly secure, so please don't put sensitive personal information in feedback.
9. Changes
We'll update this page if what the app does with data changes, and change the date at the top. Significant changes will be shown in the app.
